As a little girl I loved looking through our family foto albums. One album in particular was of my family (minus me; I was too little to go and stayed with a babysitter) at Carlsbad Caverns. I can still see the picture. My dad with his moustache and ever-present shades, mom in her floral miniskirt and her bouffant hairdo, (my sisters) Linda with her Marie Osmond smile and cable white knee-high socks, and Laura with uneven pig-tails and some sort of polyester short-suit on. They all seemed to be in high spirits. I remember thinking how magical and strange the place seemed. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. I would stare at that picture so much, it almost felt like I had been there. Sometimes I would pretend I was the one who had taken the picture (I have quite an imagination).
Being so close to the caverns, I knew I had to go. I went through the different areas all in one day, but because it was so spectacular I had to go a second day and check it out all over again. The caverns are truly a magical place. It was strange to be there so many years after my family had been. I wonder if we all walked the same routes?
I found it very challenging to shoot fotos in the underground conditions….. here are a few from above ground. hiking with baby….
The later two pics of Baby reminded me of “127 Hours”…looks like a VERY cool place to visit!
well, baby still has both arms, although one of her eyes is starting to go….
Cool! I’m glad you finally got to see it for yourself. It was nice of you not to leave baby with a sitter, like they did to you.
I LOVE these photos and your thoughts. The trip was fun but would have been so much better with you there. Love and miss you Roo!!!
